The U.S. Supreme Court may decide by next week whether it will hear a case brought by gay-marriage opponents who want to roll back marriage equality in Washington, D.C.
The Washington Blade reports that the nine justices have scheduled a Friday meeting to discuss whether the court will grant certiorari in Jackson v. D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics. That decision could come as early as next Tuesday.
In December 2009 the D.C. city council passed a civil marriage equality act allowing same-sex couples the right to marry, signed into law the following March by Mayor Adrian Fenty.
After several unsuccessful legal challenges to the law, Bishop Harry Jackson, who leads Hope Christian Church in Beltsville, Md., filed a petition in October asking the council to allow a ballot initiative on marriage equality in the nation's capital.
