The Food and Drug Administration approved a once-daily drug for people with HIV who have used antiretrovirals in the past, as long as they show no resistance to other HIV medications.
Prezista is to be used in conjunction with Norvir, also taken once daily. It was previously recommended that people already taking antiretroviral treatments take two 600-mg doses of Prezista, along with one 100-mg dose of Norvir, according to AIDS Meds. Meanwhile, people with HIV just beginning their antiretroviral treatment were instructed to take a slightly higher dose of Prezista once a day, along with the same amount of Norvir.
The new recommendation, approved by the FDA, is based on a study showing that one daily dose of 800 mg of Prezista has the same efficacy of two 600-mg doses, as long as the person did not show resistance to the drug.
