BRUTAL MURDER: Teen Shoots + Hacks Gay Roommate To Death After He 'Turned Straight Again'

Some people are mentally disturbed. And then there is Michael Anderson (pictured), a 19-year-old North Carolina man, who called 911 and told the dispatcher he had taken Mucinex cough medicine and then hacked his gay roommate to death with an axe after shooting him.

Facing murder charges in the death of Stephen Starr (pictured below), Anderson can be heard telling the 911 operator at 4:45am Monday, "I took some pills and, um, the pills made me go mad and I murdered my roommate. shot him three times and then I used an axe and mutilated his body." While being taken away from the home the two men shared, Anderson told reporters he loved ("as a friend") his slain roommate. But during the 911 call, Anderson says, "I was straight and I wanted to go bisexual just to experiment and I went to a gay club and I met him and I went to his house. And he took me in and I turned straight again and he wanted to touch me and stuff and I wouldn't let him and he kept trying and I waited until he went to sleep and then I shot him 3 times and then I mutilated him very badly." Yes, that's the sound of his defense attorney mounting a gay panic-by-medicine defense.

As for Starr, his lifeless body was found shot (by both a handgun and shotgun), stabbed (with the side of his body carved with a word), and torn up with the axe. Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid says it's "probably one of the worst scenes I have seen in my 30 years of law enforcement."

Anderson's Facebook postings, however, indicate he may have planned the murder. Two successive posts on the site — where his status was listed "in a relationship" — declare his intent ("my killing starts tonight") and then appear to announce what he did ("i finally cracked guys i really did it this time").

In the middle of the 911 call (full recording below), Anderson says: "Oh lord, I don't know why I did this. … I can't believe I killed my roommate." He then tells the operator that when the police come they won't even recognize Starr's body. "The axe is inside his stomach."

Ugandan gay activist murdered, another’s life hangs in the balance

David Kato Kisulle
By Jamie McGonnigal

Ugandan activist David Kato Kisulle has been murdered in his home in Kampala, according to the Box Turtle Bulletin and the BBC.

He was found having been beaten in the skull with a hammer a his home and there is little more information than that at this time. What we do know is that Kato was featured in the Ugandan tabloid Rolling Stone, which featured names and photos of gay men under the headline “HANG THEM!”

Kato was one of three plaintiffs seeking a permanent injunction against the tabloid, which was successful. And in recent days, he had told friends of several death threats he’d received and was in fear for his life.

Since the introduction last year of the “Anti-Homosexual Bill” which has come to be known as the “Kill the Gays Bill” has been the topic of outrage from LGBT organizations around the country. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow has brought this bill to light in the US and featured the author of the bill, David Bahati in a two-part interview last month.

Today’s murder also highlights an important case regarding Ugandan Brenda Namigadde living in the UK and facing deportation back to Uganda after failed please for asylum. All Out has launched a campaign to keep Brenda in the UK, which may quite literally save her life.

“Kill the Gays Bill” Author Bahati said of Namigadde:

“Brenda is welcome in Uganda if she will abandon or repent her behaviour. Here in Uganda, homosexuality is not a human right. It is behaviour that is learned and it can be unlearned. We wouldn’t want Brenda to be painting a wrong picture of Uganda, that we are harassing homosexuals.”

It would seem Bahati may be correct, Uganda is doing far worse than harassing homosexuals.

Trans, Gay Murders Rock Honduras

By Michelle Garcia

Three murders in Honduras have raised the number of LGBT deaths in the Central American country to 31 in recent months, a cause for concern among officials at the U.S. Embassy.

"The protection of Honduran law extends to all its citizens regardless of sexual orientation and the Lobo Administration has repeatedly expressed its commitment to defend the rights of all Honduran citizens," read a statement from the embassy. "It is in this regard that we call upon Honduran law enforcement authorities to vigorously investigate these crimes, bring to justice the perpetrators, and take all necessary steps to protect LGBT persons, who are among the most vulnerable to violence and abuse in Honduras."

Those killed recently include a 23-year-old transgender woman known as Lorenza, according to Gay City News in New York. She was found dead in Comayagüela in December, with bloody rocks near her body, indicating she may have been stoned to death as well as set on fire. Condoms were also found near her body, leading to speculation that she was also raped.

Gay City News blames the murders on a government-backed campaign to target gay people.

According to the National Resistance Front's website, which has been keeping tabs on the murders, police have been minimally invested in solving the cases.
