Elton Picks Lesbian Godmothers

By Advocate.com Editors

New parents Elton John and David Furnish have named two close friends, a lesbian couple, to be their son's godparents.

Magazine editor Ingrid Sischy and her partner, Sandy Brant, will be godmothers for Zachary Furnish-John, who was born on Christmas Day to a surrogate mother.

The four have been friends for years and vacation together regularly. An unnamed source told the Daily Mail that Sischy and Brant were among a small handful of people Furnish and John entrusted with the details of the surrogate pregnancy.

Watchdog Won't Look at Antigay Interview

By Julie Bolcer

The U.K. broadcasting watchdog Ofcom said it would not investigate complaints about a BBC News interview in which Stephen Green, who has advocated for the execution of HIV-positive gay men, dismissed the new child of Elton John and David Furnish as a "designer baby."

According to Pink News, Ofcom said it could only examine the content of programs, not the editorial decisions, and the interview with Stephen Green appeared to be edited.

“The watchdog may asses the content of programmes but said Mr Green’s segment did not contain ‘aggressive incitement or derogatory language’ and was clearly marked as his own opinion,” reported Pink News.

Pink News reports that in the interview Green said, “This isn’t just a designer baby for Sir Elton John, this is a designer accessory ... [cut] Now it seems like money can buy him anything, and so he has entered into this peculiar arrangement ... [cut] The baby is a product of it. A baby needs a mother and it seems an act of pure selfishness to deprive a baby of a mother.”

Ofcom has received almost 100 complaints about the segment. The BBC also has received complaints and rejected them. However, viewers can still complain to the BBC Trust, which assesses not just content but the editorial decisions behind it.

The gays rescue the tragic "People's Choice Awards"

by snicks

I judge awards shows by how many times I push the mute button on the remote, and last night's People's Choice Awards — well let's just say I firmly believe I now have Carpal Tunnel.

The PCA's are unique in that the winners are notified beforehand, which is why you'll never see shots of the nominees in their seats when their names are announced. Because why would you attend if you knew you were going to lose?

This doesn't stop some winners from feigning surprise that they won, but the word must have gotten out, because I didn't see any of that phoniness this year (unfortunately).

You can go here for a complete list of the winners, but let's take a look at some of the highlights ... and lowlights.

The gays ruled!

Jane Lynch won Favorite TV Comedy Actress, meaning both top TV comedy awards were gay hogged. Glee was announced as Favorite TV Comedy at the same time, and as Jane gave her speech (thanking her partner Lara), she seemed oblivious to the fact that Corey Montieth and Chris Colfer were standing right behind her — until the last five seconds.

In the press room, Jane talks about playing Mrs. Brady, sitting in her closet and her wish for Javier Bardem and Tyne Daly to guest star on Glee.

Neil Patrick Harris won for Favorite TV Comedy Actor. He kissed David on the cheek, then gave a speech that will be hard to top this award season.

Backstage Neil was inundated with questions about twins Harper and Gideon. It's obvious that fatherhood suits him well.

Elton John made his first TV appearance since announcing his fatherhood, and was given a standing ovation. It was a sweet moment.

The final highlight was when Pauley Perrette announced the award for — well, I don't remember, because I was too busy appreciating her dress. Pauley has become one of the great equality advocates of the last few years, and she wins the award for Best Dressed.

As for the lowlights, take your pick. I almost didn't get through the first ten minutes because it featured host Queen Latifah (who was atrocious) giving us a sneak peek at The Dilemma. Um, thanks?

The first award was for Favorite Comedy Actor, presented by a dazed and confused Jennifer Aniston to Adam Sandler, who proceeded to prove why he's actually one if the unfunniest people on the face of the earth. And to add insult, he brought the other two unfunniest people on the face of the earth onstage, David Spade and Rob Schneider.

I mentioned that Queen Latifah was atrocious last night, and in all honesty, she had me reaching for the mute button numerous times. It was cringe-inducing. Below you can see her attempt to interview those vapid reality sisters. it's not pretty.

Did we mention that Kristen Stewart picked up an award for Favorite Movie Actress?

N.Y. Post Continues Tradition of Homophobia With ‘Elton and Wife’ Headline

By Advocate.com Editors

Announcing the adoption of Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John to new dads Elton John (pictured, right) and partner David Furnish (left), the New York Post continued a tradition of antigay language and cartoons, running a story Wednesday with the headline “Elton and wife proud dads.”

The story by David K. Li, which ran in the print edition and online, was free of antigay slurs or language, but the headline, inaccurate, sophomoric, antigay, and anti-female, has elicited responses from blogs and editorial writers.

Gawker’s Brian Moylan points out that apart from the insult to both gay men and women, the joke is journalistically inaccurate, as the men are civil partners in the United Kingdom, though not technically married.

GLAAD reached out to the New York Post’s managing editor, but the newspaper has not changed its headline. In previous years GLAAD has taken to task the newspaper for calling transgender women “she-males” and for its insulting cartoon depictions of gay men. The watchdog group was created 25 years ago in response to the Post’s antigay AIDS coverage.

Elton John, David Furnish Have Son Via Surrogate

Finally, Elton John can call himself a father.

The pop rock superstar and his long-time husband, David Furnish, announced to Us Weekly that they have had a child via a surrogate mother in California. Their son, named Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, was born on Christmas day, and weighed seven pounds and 15 ounces.

"We are overwhelmed with happiness and joy at this very special moment," the new fathers told the magazine. "Zachary is healthy and doing really well, and we are very proud and happy parents."

It's been a long road for John and Furnish in their quest to be fathers; in 2009, they were denied the right to adopt an HIV-positive toddler from the Ukraine, due to John's age and the country's lack of recognition of civil unions rendering him single by their laws.

John said that he still planned to support the child and his brother financially, and now has a son of his own, too. And one with the name Levon, one of John's many well-known songs.
